Chapter 14
It was four in the morning and the riots having calmed down somewhat, Ross placed a call from the old ladyâs house, asking for some assistance. He didnât give a name but stayed close to the house until he saw the arrival of a couple of uniformed officers to make sure the woman was okay. Shortly afterwards, he saw a medic appear and at that point, Ross took his leave.
The sun was beginning to permeate the sky and the estate wasnât as dark as it had been the previous night. At some point, all the lights had gone out, someone having cut a significant line, but that had been restored sometime after three. Although it was quieter, the police presence was still large.
Ross needed to amble back to his car which was located on the far side of the estate in the garage of a man he had contacted. There was no way Ross was leaving his car in the middle of a riot, but it did mean he had to walk across the entire estate in the early hours of the morning. When he made it back into the station, no doubt Macleod would pressurise him for news about the grenade. Ross thought the grenade was important, but not as important as trying to find out what was happening on the estate, and so heâd made the uncomfortable decision to work through the night.
Heâd managed a coffee at the old ladyâs and sheâd been grateful to him, but now he was famished. Continuing his persona of an old drunk, Ross continued to shuffle along, barely looking up at anyone that went past. There were still several young men out and about, the occasional gaggle of girls too, but they were all standing at a distance, away from the officers who had put away their riot gear. Theyâd be nearby, vans around the corner, but now the key was to calm everything down.
Ross was hobbling across the park area when he saw what looked like a young man handing out money. The kids he was handing it out to could only have been thirteen or fourteen. What on earth were they doing out at this time of the morning. Was it drugs? Maybe that was at the core of it. Ross shambled over to where the deal was being done. As he got closer, the man and the youths looked at him once but then ignored him, going back to their dealings. Once whatever transaction was complete, Ross made his way over to the youths.
âWhat have you got there?â he asked.
âGet off, granddad. Go on, head home.â
âDonât granddad me; what have you got? Anything worthwhile?â
âWe havenât got anything,â said one of the youths, and Ross looked at the empty hands. He could see there was a fat pocket, however. He quickly reached over, pulled out what was inside. All he could see was money. This was wrong. The exchange went the wrong way. These youths should have been kids picking up the drugs and their money going the other way.
